Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

It's better if you don't understand; just listen and have a good time. That's the response Bruno Mars will give you with a smile when asked to describe his sound and music. He would much rather sing, perform, and write his songs than talk about them, but that is becoming more and more unavoidable these days. It might seem that Mars appeared out of nowhere, co-writing, producing and performing on B.o.B's #1 "Nothin' On You" followed by Travie McCoy's chart-climbing "Billionaire", but he makes one thing clear: "It's not an overnight success".

Mars is a multitalented singer, songwriter, producer and musician who feels most at home when he's performing. Born to a musical family in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was practically raised on the stage. His father, a Latin percussionist from Brooklyn, organized a Vegas-style revue that featured the entire family, including his mother, a talented vocalist. When a four-year-old Mars observed his family performing Motown hits, doo-wop medleys and impersonations for enthusiastic crowds all over his native Waikiki Beach, "I was jealous!" says Mars with a laugh. "My dad put me on stage and I remember singing an Elvis song and that was it. Ever since that moment, I've been addicted."

Rich in diverse music from all over the globe, Honolulu was an exciting hometown for the budding singer/songwriter. On one end of the spectrum, his home was filled with the 1950s classics that were his father's passion. Meanwhile, the city is rich in traditional sounds, including reggae, rock and folk music, as well as the latest pop hits. "Hawaii is basically in the middle of the world, so you're exposed to every type of music over there," explains Mars.

As soon as he graduated high school, Mars left Hawaii for Los Angeles with dreams of launching his career as a performer. Those dreams got put on hold, however, when The Smeezingtons, the songwriting/production team he founded with Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine, suddenly took off. The pair has crafted major hits for a diverse roster of talent, including Flo Rida's "Right Round", Travie McCoy's "Billionaire", Brandy's "Long Distance" and K'Naan's "Waving Flags", which is the theme song for the upcoming World Cup.

Mars describes his time behind the scenes as important to his development as an artist. "I realized that you have to go into this industry as an artist with a clear vision and understanding of who you are. Being so young when I was first signed, I never really had a sense of who I wanted to be. Now things are really working out because everything that I'm singing, writing and composing is really me."

On the heels of "Nothin' on You" and "Billionaire" and as a preview of what's to come from Bruno Mars, Elektra Records is releasing a 4-song EP aptly titled "It's Better If You Don't Understand". The title is taken from a lyric to "The Other Side"; one of the songs included that features Cee-Lo Green and re-teams Mars with B.o.B. The song depicts the musician's current routine. "It's basically a story of the lifestyle you end up living as an artist and how I would describe it to a girl I just met to try and explain, but in the end… It's better if you don't understand."

When asked to describe the music he's about to release Mars says "it's hard to put myself in a box. I just write songs that I strongly believe in and that are coming from inside. There's no tricks. It's honesty with big melodies. And I'm going to be singing the s— out of them." The collection of songs on the EP are written from various real-life experiences, where Mars blends his buoyant voice with purposefully simple production. All of the songs are produced and written with his Smeezingtons partner Philip Lawrence.

Although he's incredibly proud of the recordings, Mars feels the best way to experience the sound is to see him perform live with his band. "That is what I'm most excited for – taking these songs and traveling them around the world." The only place he would rather be than in the recording studio, is with his band on stage – where he grew up. "I think people are really going to gravitate towards the live show. We turn it into a party."

Bruno Mars reveals recession inspiration

Bruno Mars reveals recession inspiration

Brit Award nominee Bruno Mars has revealed how the recession in the UK inspired him to write one of the most successful songs of his career so far. Bruno was in the UK when he was short changed trying to convert some of his US dollars into English pound sterling, which inspired him to pen the Travie McCoy hit Billionaire.
Mars explained, "I was in London and I wanted to exchange pounds. So I gave him $500 and he basically gave me back £200. I was like 'What?! How does this work?' This is how the Billionairething started out. I started humming it on the streets. Travie came along later and put his verses on it and then it hit the charts."

Bruno Mars is set to return to the UK later this month, as he is nominated for the Best International Male at the upcoming Brit Awards and he stands quite a good chance of taking the gong home with him. The Brit Awards are expected to follow the trend of the Grammy Awards and be dominated by singer Adele. The Brit Awards are set to take place on February 21 in London at the O2 Arena.

FULL BIOGRAPHY

  1. After a string of behind-the-scene jobs -- everything from writing songs for Brandy to impersonating Elvis -- singer/songwriter/producer Bruno Mars put his name on top of the charts in 2010 by collaborating with rapper B.o.B. for the single "Nothin' on You." Born Peter Hernandez in Waikiki, Hawaii, Mars' kicked off his career at the age of four fronting his uncle's band as the Island's youngest Elvis impersonator. Ten years later, he was impersonating the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, with the Legends in Concert show. After graduation, his uncle convinced him to move to the Mainland and follow of his dream of becoming a singer. Months of frustration and going nowhere followed before Mars met songwriter Phillip Lawrence, the man who would convince him to try his hand at writing songs for other artists. The two would dub themselves the Smeezingtons and co-write "Long Distance" which would be recorded in 2008 by R&B singer Brandy. The gigs came in fast after that and in 2009, when the duo co-wrote "Right Round" for rapper Flo Rida, they had their first number one hit on their hands. A year later, Mars would co-write and sing on B.o.B.'s number one hit "Nothin' on You," and would do the same for Travie McCoy with his cut "Billionaire." Also in 2010, he released his debut solo EP It's Better If You Don't Understand which featured more pop material mixed with the R&B.

10 QUESTIONS FOR BRUNO MARS

10 QUESTIONS FOR BRUNO MARS

Bruno Mars
Rest assured, Bruno Mars is not going bald. The 23-year-old wants his fans to know that the only thing he’s hiding under his signature fedora, which today happens to be grey, is a mess of unruly hair. “I always rocked an afro in high school,” he reveals to Rap-Up.com while sitting on a couch inside a Manhattan high-rise. “It was humongous. After I cut it, I got into these hats and I could never get rid of them. I’ll put a baseball hat on every once in awhile, but mainly it’s a fedora. Once I unveil the collection, it’s gonna be monumental.”
Just like his assortment of hats, Mars’ career is just as epic. Since bidding farewell to his home state of Hawaii as a teenager, the Elektra Records signee formed The Smeezingtons—a production group comprised of himself, Phil Lawrence, and Ari Levine, teamed with rapper B.o.B to score the No. 1 record “Nothin’ on You,” and created a four-song EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, to whet listeners’ appetites until the release of his debut album. Quite the résumé for a man who once sang Chuck Berry tunes for tourists on his native island.
The recent success Bruno Mars has experienced hasn’t turned him into a pompous jerk. He politely excuses himself to take a call from Ari, who’s handling a studio session back in L.A. “We’re still humble,” admits Phil, who accompanied Bruno for the day. “Our A&R Aaron Bay-Schuck likes to remind us about an embarrassing record we once made. It keeps us in check.” As Bruno makes his way back to the couch, laughter ensues while he threatens Phil for demonstrating the “bad” song’s chorus. The curly-haired crooner may be embarrassed by the lackluster work, but these days, his feats outnumber his foibles.

1. You’re 23 years old now. Let’s rewind to 18. What were you doing at that age, during this same moment?
I just got signed to Motown Records as a solo artist. But I was too young. I had been doing shows my whole life. I had never really recorded, and never had too much experience recording. Let alone producing, I had never written a song before. It worked out the way it had to work out because I needed to learn a lot.

2. How’d your moniker come about?
Bruno is after Bruno Sammartino, who was this big fat wrestler. I guess I was this chunky little baby, so my dad used to call me that as a nickname. The Mars came up just because I felt like I didn’t have no pizzazz, and a lot of girls say I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.

3. Why did you decide to leave Hawaii to pursue a music career in L.A.?
I accomplished a lot in Hawaii as an entertainer, but never really dabbled in original music. I was like a circus freak—I used to sing songs, I used to open up for a Las Vegas-style magic show. I’d sing songs for all the tourists. It was always cover songs—everything from Chuck Berry to Usher. Then I got fed up, like I’m singing songs to a bunch of tourists that don’t even speak English. I felt like I could do more. I do miss Hawaii though. People over there are real content and satisfied with just being on an island, having kids at a very young age. It’s not like you’re trying to be an actor or trying to be a musician with millions of other people, and it’s just hustle, hustle, hustle. That’s what I miss the most, just going down there and everyone’s just living life, as opposed to grinding.

4. Did you have any weird moments when you first arrived in L.A. that made you think, “This place is crazy”?
I remember pulling up to my parking stall one day and there was this homeless guy just squatting and turding all over. That was my “Welcome home.” At that time, I was driving aVolkswagen Jetta. It had one window that wouldn’t roll down in the summer and no locks on the door. And of course no radio or no AC.

5. What’s the significance of some of your tattoos?
The last tattoo I got was my mother’s name on my arm, Bernadette. The first one I ever got, I was 19, it was a sacred heart. I got it upside down. It basically looked like an ass shooting fire. I had it for about two years before I was like, “Let me do something about this.” So I got it covered up. My mom’s reaction to my first tattoo was, “Why are you marking up your body?” Then after I showed her I got her name tattooed on me, she was ecstatic.

6. Besides “Nothin’ on You,” which record are you and The Smeezingtons most proud of creating?
For me, there’s a song we did with K’naan featuring Adam Levine called “Bang Bang.” That kinda established our sound as producers because it was one of the first songs we did. That was for K’naan’s album, Troubadour. We had [Maroon 5 frontman] Adam Levine sing the hook, which was pretty big. I think if you listen to “Bang Bang” and “Nothin’ on You,” they could’ve been on the same album because it’s like this different hip-hop with live instrumentation. I think our strong point is live instrumentation.

7. How do you, Phil, and Ari decide on a final product during the recording process?
Bruno: Phil throws a fit.
Phil: I’m the strongest, so we arm wrestle.
Bruno: Well, that’s why we’re together because we don’t have those problems. We all trust each other’s judgment. Sometimes I’ll be like, “I really don’t like that.” And both Ari and Phil will be like, “You’re trippin’, dog, you’re trippin’.” Or I’ll play something, then Phil will sing it, and then we’ll find it. We’re not the greatest musicians in the world, but we can make some hot shit.

8. What is your thought process when going in to make a record?
I think it always happens differently. Sometimes we’ll have a melody first. Sometimes we’ll hear someone say something, “I believe in magic.” Then it’ll be like, “Wow, that really resonated.” So I’ll go write that down on a piece of paper. Then we’ll take that melody that he hummed or I hummed and we’ll try to put that little phrase in there. But it always works differently. Some people like to call it math, we call it science [laughs].

9. Are there any songs you felt embarrassed about creating?
Bruno: This is like two years ago. We were getting drunk in the studio one night and this guy was playing a track and we wrote this song called “Bedroom Bandit.” We swore it was a smash. Then we sobered up the next day. Phil, don’t sing it.
Phil: It was really bad. [Sings] I said you can’t tie me down, shorty, I’m already with the next girl/ You can’t tie me down, ’cause I’m the bedroom bandit.

10. What can we expect from your full-length debut album that’s set for release later this year?
You can expect that we’re gonna put our balls into it. Luckily, I feel like everything that we’ve been working for and everything we’ve learned in the past couple years has really enhanced our production and our writing. I guess we’re at our most creative zone right now. We’re excited that “Nothin’ on You” and “Billionaire” are both getting love and they’re kinda two totally different sounds. That’s always been our struggle ’cause we love so many kinds of music. Like I play the guitar on stage. I love old R&B and all that. I think that’s kinda helping us break as artists because people don’t know what to expect, which is a good thing. I’d love to work with Danger Mouse, I love Mark Ronson. Mark Ronson gets the live instrumentation without it sounding too adult contemporary. There’s a fine line.

Hmm, bagaimana tuh rasanya menjadi model sampul Playboy? "Woke up this mornin feelin like a playboy," jawab Bruno lewat akun Twitternya. (dym/mae)

lirik lagu Bruno Mars - Runaway Baby

ooohhhhhh oh

so easy to forget
all of the little things we do.
like callin' for no reason
just to say the words: "baby, i love you."
i know lately (lately)
i've been busy (busy)
but a second doesn't go by without you crossin' my mind.
it's been so long (so long)
since we had time (had time)
let's take a day and make everything right
just take my hand, fall in love with me again

let's runaway to the place, where love first found us.
let's runaway for the day, don't need anyone around us.
when everything in love gets so complicated
it only takes a day to change it
what i have to say, can't wait
all i need is a day,
so let's runaway.
(let's runaway, just for the day)
runaway
runaway

girl, you've been so patient
spendin' nights alone and not complainin'
but i'll make it up to you
and i promise today
i won't keep you waitin'. (oh-oh-oh)
please give me (oh-oh-oh) this one chance
to remind you of everything we have
i won't give up
i'm too much in love
and i want you to know that.
just take my hand, fall in love with me again

let's runaway to the place, where love first found us.
let's runaway for the day, don't need anyone around us. (oh-oh-oh)
when everything in love gets so complicated
it only takes a day to change it.
what i have to say can't wait
all i need is a day.

so let's runaway for the day!
and i'll give everything in this moment.
and i promise to make, everyday just like today

let's runaway to the place, where love first found us.
let's runaway for the day, don't need anyone around us. (oh-oh-oh)
when everything in love gets so complicated
it only takes a day to change it.
what i have to say can't wait,
all i need is a day,
so let's runaway.
